What would change in your life if driving wasn’t an option?

More than one third of people living in the United States are nondrivers.

We are people with disabilities, young people, seniors and people who can’t afford cars or gas. We created Week Without Driving so that those who have the option to drive can learn firsthand about the barriers and challenges that nondrivers face. Together, we can create communities that include all of us.

How Can i Join Week Without Driving?

Take transit, walk, roll or ride.

Instead of driving yourself, try to figure out another way to get where you need to go for all of or some trips. Walk, roll, take the bus, ride a bike or a scooter.

Ask for a ride.

You can ask or pay for rides from other people. What does it feel like to rely on others? Does it change what trips you take?

Who has choices, what are your choices?

It’s easier to give up your keys if you can afford to live in a walkable area well served by transit. Understand what choices you have and why.

If you still have to drive, you haven’t “failed.”

There may be trips you can only make if you drive yourself. Reflect on what someone who could not drive would have done in your situation.

IMPACT

By highlighting how there are people who lack access to driving in every community, Week Without Driving helps win policies that support access across both rural and urban communities — and everywhere in between.

“This week was a reminder that mobility is a human right. And it’s also a reminder that so many people in our region are excluded from this right, simply because driving for them is not an option.” — King County (Washington) Executive Girmay Zahilay

“Traveling to Southeast DC on Day 4 required multiple connections across various modes and still took an hour. I’m leaving the challenge with an even deeper appreciation for the transit options available to me, and a renewed sense of commitment to expanding District residents’ access to transit.” — DC Councilmember Charles Allen

“I’m learning so much about how to better represent my constituents who don’t drive.”— Arizona State Senator Analise Ortiz
